LinkedIn Don't miss your Direct Message

How to make sure you don’t miss your DM’s on LinkedIn

Direct messaging on LinkedIn is where the real magic happens.  Once you’ve started to build your connections on LinkedIn, the next step is to grow those relationships.  Otherwise, they just remain as ‘connections’ and they never become ‘potential business partners’.

If you’re using LinkedIn to grow your business, it’s important that you develop the relationships you make on LinkedIn in your DM’s. Choose a selection of connections to nurture and grow; then watch the business requests come in.

There will be a time when you’re building a relationship with a connection on LinkedIn that you want to send them a direct message (DM), to talk about something on a more personal level, or even arrange to meet away from LinkedIn.  I call this ‘LinkingOut’.  In fact, I created LinkingOutClub https://www.sarahclaysocial.com/linkingout-club for this very reason.

One of the criticisms I hear about LinkedIn is that it is easy to miss direct messages.  This happens to me quite a lot and it’s very frustrating. The default way that LinkedIn shows you your DM’s is in chronological order so if you have a lot of DM’s, the older ones are not visible on your screen. The more DM’s you get, the further down the list they go and it’s very easy for unread DM’s to get lost forever.

Thankfully, there is a very simple fix for this!

You can change the way you view your DM’s from chronological to ‘unread’! The same as you can do for your emails.

Slightly annoyingly, you cannot change the default display but at least you can go in and take a look. Here’s how you change your DM’s to ‘unread’

Go to your DM’s by clicking on ‘Messaging’ at the top of your profile

Once in your DM’s go to ‘Search messages’ at the top

Click on the 3 little lines with circles on them

Click on ‘Unread’

You may be very surprised by what you see!

WHAT TO DO IF THERE ARE OLD UNREAD MESSAGES?

Reply!

It doesn’t matter how old they are. Reply and tell the truth! Explain how sorry you are for not replying but that their message ‘slipped down’ your message feed. Only now that you know how to view by unread have you seen their message…..

When we make a mistake, acknowledge it, apologise for it and rectify it – we are showing our human side! You will be amazed at the positive responses you will get!

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I CHECK FOR UNREAD MESSAGES?

Every day if possible but if not, once a week at least.

I hope this has been helpful! If you want to know more about how to handle direct messages or about anything else to do with LinkedIn, please subscribe to my newsletter and you could get these tips right in your email every week!
